We’ve all read more than enough articles urging us to eat nutritious foods and get plenty of sleep and exercise for optimum health. Those things are critical, of course. But what else can you do to maintain your health? Read on for ideas you can live with.
Make sure you’re having fun
Having fun is, well–fun, but it can also bring a host of benefits, such as reducing stress, enhancing sleep, reducing pain, and protecting memory. Different people have different ideas of what activities are fun, and that’s fine. Make sure you schedule time for activities you enjoy, whether you’re dancing, playing sports, singing karaoke, planting a garden, or visiting a museum. Consider the benefits of laughter while you’re focused on fun. Going to a comedy club, watching a funny movie or video, or even creating your own video may have you and your family giggling. Laughter can reduce stress hormones, boost your immunity, and help you bond with friends.
Fine tune your spiritual practices
Whether you embrace an organized religion or pursue spiritual practices on your own, you can boost your own health and well-being. Studies have found that people who practice some type of religion or spiritual tradition are more likely to be in good physical and mental health. Prayer and meditation can reduce stress levels and lower blood pressure and heart rate. People who embrace spiritual practices are often happier than those who don’t, and happiness leads to better health. Participation in religious or spiritual practice at least once a week was correlated with fewer cardiovascular issues, longer life, and better overall health.
Reconsider your work
If your current job is no longer fulfilling or has become an unrelenting source of stress, it may be time for something different. People and situations change, and a situation that was once a good fit for you may have gradually become a negative influence on your physical and mental health. You might be ready for a complete change, or you may be able to branch out into an area you already have some knowledge about, such as medical coding, for example. Although you could attend classes in person, many online courses of study are available. Examples of potential medical coding online courses include Medical Coding Fundamentals and related classes. Once the coursework is completed you’ll be tested to be sure you are ready for a paid position.
Involve your kids
If your kids are involved in the things you do to maintain your health they will also benefit, and the habits are more likely to stick for all of you. If having fun is on your agenda, there are plenty of activities you can include your children in, such as playing croquet, visiting the zoo, building a birdhouse, or splashing in the pool. Fun time with the young ones can also be a good way to make sure you all get exercise, whether you’re playing tag, tossing a frisbee, going on a hike, or having a dance marathon. If you undertake an activity that requires new products, make sure to read reviews of the items before you purchase. Not having time for the gym is no longer a good excuse, as there are so many other ways to get exercise, whether it’s climbing stairs and skipping the elevator or kayaking with your family. If you attend a church, temple, or mosque, you can make it a family event. Many places of worship have special activities for kids. Including your children in all these activities can not only help keep them healthy, but it can also increase the bonds between you.
Recap
Maintaining good physical and mental health is a process that never ends. Take time to evaluate your work and your religious and spiritual practices. You may need to fine-tune them or look for something entirely different. Although life can quickly become overwhelming, be sure to clear some time for having fun, which can enhance both physical and mental health. As much as possible, get your kids involved in your fun and spiritual activities, as well as movement and exercise. The entire family will benefit.
