Scripture Lesson:  Excerpts from Rev. 7:1-15
Topic: Revelation 7th Chapter
(These notes will be updated later.)

Revelation 7:1-4, 7-10, 13-15 “1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel. … After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; 10 And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. … 13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? 14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.”

Introduction
Revelation 7th Chapter describes the last part of the sixth seal which began with a great earthquake, the sun being darkened, the moon turning to blood, and men fleeing from the wrath of Yahweh (Rev. 6:12-17). This last part of the six seal represent a sealing process.

Rev. 7:1
1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.”

What the Apostle John saw in his panoramic vision is symbolic and needs to be interpreted using the Law and and Prophets (Isa. 8:20) to understand the images John is seeing.

Without using the Law and Prophets, one is left with his own imagination for the interpretation.

Here the four angels standing on the four corners of the earth is reflected in the brazen altar with the four horns where the priests would place the blood of sacrifices on them for the atonement of Israel’s sin (Lev. 9:9; Ezek. 43:20).

These four angels also represent the four points of blood from the lambs and goats on the door posts of Israel’s houses in Egypt. The blood protected Israel from the death angel that would kill firstborn man and beasts that didn’t have the blood on their door posts.

Exodus 12:23
“When the LORD passes through to strike down the Egyptians, He will see the blood on the top and the two sideposts and pass over the door; so He will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down.”

Now the four winds represents spirit. Remember, the first book of the Bible begins with the spirit moving on the face of the waters.

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:1-2 KJV

Daniel 7:2
Daniel declared, “I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the great sea.”

Now the Messiah fulfilled this by saying the following.

Mark 13:27
“And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.”

The earth comprises man who was made from the dust of the earth (Gen. 2:7).

The whole body of Israel can be represented as a sea of people (Rev. 17:15) who will be resurrected.

Israel can also be represented as a forest of trees for the blind man who the Messiah healed said he saw
“men as trees walking.” Mark 8:22-24

Rev. 7:2-3
And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.”

This is repeat of the first verse. Another angel ascending from the east tells the four angels holding the winds not to hurt anyone with the seal.

The sun rises or ascends from the east or the resurrection every morning.  Using the Tabernacle pattern, the angel would be descending from the Most Holy Place as the tabernacle faced East toward the rising sun.

As we mentioned above, the seal typifies the blood of the lamb on the door posts of the children of Israel in Egypt which sealed their physical dwelling from the death Angel. Their belief that the blood of the lamb spared Israel from the death Angel symbolized partaking of or believing in Yahshua’s words. The Messiah said the flesh profits nothing.

“It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” (John 6:63).

The Messiah also said: “Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you (John 6:53).” Many who heard these words took them physically or carnally and found them hard to accept (John 6:60, 66).

The angel is also reflected in Ezekiel the prophet seeing angels placing the mark or seal on the foreheads of the believers.

Ezekiel 9:4
"Go throughout the city of Jerusalem," said the LORD, "and put a mark on the foreheads of the men sighing and groaning over all the abominations committed there."

Ezekiel 9:6
“Slaughter the old men, the young men and maidens, the women and children, but do not go near anyone who has the mark. Now begin at My sanctuary." So they began with the elders who were before the temple.”

Rev. 7:4-8
And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel. Of the tribe of Juda were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Aser were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Nephthalim were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Manasses were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Simeon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Levi were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Issachar were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Zabulon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Joseph were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand.”

Twelve Tribes of Israel

Gen. 48:6 “And thy issue, which thou begettest after them, shall be thine, and shall be called after the name of their brethren in their inheritance.”

See explanation of 144,000 in Rev. 12-14th Chap.

What the 144,000 represent are those offspring of the Children of Israel who were born in the Wilderness during their 40 year sojourn for those that came up out of Egypt all died due to disobedience.

Numbers 26:65
For the Lord had said of them, “They shall surely die in the wilderness.” And not a man was left of them, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.”

Tribes listed in Rev. 7 are not given in birth order. Dan, one of Israel’s sons is not mentioned.  Manasses, Joseph’s son, is mentioned.

To fully understand, why the tribe of Dan is not counted as one of the 12 here and Manasses was put in his place, I must return to the Law and the Prophets to get a full explanation of this.

Here is some background.
Joseph was sold onto slavery by his brothers (Gen. 37:27). Cutting this story short follows.  He was put into prison for refusing to having an affair with the wife of a slave master, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard Potiphar, whose wife tried to seduce him (Ex. 39:1)
While Joseph was in prison, he interpreted dreams of two prisoners, the chiefs baker and butler.  These dreams were later fulfilled (Gen. 49:5-23).

The butler was restored to his job and the baker was hung by Pharaoh. Now Pharaoh had a dream of 7 full ears of corns and 7 lean ears of corn. None of his wise men could interpret the dream and the butler told Pharoah about Joseph (Gn. 41:1-14).

Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dream as meaning he would have 7 years of plenty and 7 years famine. In appreciation, Pharaoh promoted Joseph to his second in command. ( Gn. 41:14-44)

Joseph was given a wife by Pharaoh (Gn. 41:45) from whom he had two sons, Ephraim and Manassas (Gn. 41:50-55) before the years of famine came.

Famine came over the land and Joseph’s father and brothers came down to Egypt to buy food. They finally settled there and Pharaoh gave them the land of Goshen (Gen. 45:7-10).

Before Jacob died, Joseph’s father, wanted to bless Joseph’s two sons. Here’s the account.

“And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him: and he held up his father's hand, to remove it from Ephraim's head unto Manasseh's head. And Joseph said unto his father, Not so, my father: for this is the firstborn; put thy right hand upon his head. And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations. And he blessed them that day, saying, In thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh: and he set Ephraim before Manasseh.” Genesis 48:17-20 KJV

So here Jacob said: “Elohim (God) make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh: and he set Ephraim before Manasseh.”

Jacob is prophesying that Israel will be split and Ephram’s descendent Jeroboam would become king of the ten northern tribes.  (I Kings. 11:26-14:20)

"Jeroboam rebuilt and fortified Shechem as the capital of the northern kingdom, and fearing that pilgrimages to the temple in Jerusalem prescribed by the Law might be an occasion for his people to go back to their old allegiance, he built two state temples [10] with golden calves, one in Bethel and the other in Dan.[6] (I Kings 12:26-40; 14:9-10)”

I Kings 12:26-40
26 And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:  27 If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the Lord at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah. 28 Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.  29 And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan.  30 And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.”

So here you have one of the reasons for Dan being removed from the list of 12 tribes. Jacob blessed each of the 12 tribes and the following is the blessing of Jacob to Dan.

Gen. 49:16-17
16 Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel. 17 Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward.”

Now we see that Dan was eventually replaced by Manassas because of Dan’s disobedience in building the golden calf and Jacob’s blessing which was in reality a curse upon him.

Rev. 7:9-12
After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; 10 And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. 11 And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, 12 Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.”

This is a future event to take place, but it is also a replay of the children of Israel that gathered around the mountain after washing their clothes and worshiping Yahweh on this throne.  They had just received the law and agreed to be obedient to all that Yahweh had said.

Exo. 19:9-12
And the Lord said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto the Lord. 10 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes, 11 And be ready against the third day: for the third day the Lord will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai.”

Rev. 7:13-14
13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? 14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”

The great tribulation began after the outpouring of the Holy Spirit with the Scribes and Pharisees and Paul before his conversion persecuting the Apostles and the early church (Acts 7-8th Chapters).

Rev. 7:15-17
15 Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. 16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. 17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.”

Remember, with the children of Israel in the wilderness they hungered for food, but it was provided for them by the Manna from heaven and quail (Exo. 16th Chapter). They came from great tribulation begin enslaved by Pharaoh.

This is the New Covenant, but it's also replayed with the gathering of all resurrected souls before the throne of Yahweh.

This ends the sixth seal and begins the seventh seal, which leads into the seven trumpets.
